Phillips earns all-state honors for Rapp baseball

Rappahannock County junior outfielder Jeremiah Phillips was named to the second-team VHSL Class 1 all-state baseball team, the league announced Monday afternoon.

He joins 23 others named first- and second-team all-state selections.

Chilhowie junior pitcher Dawson Tuell, a member of the state runners-up Warriors, earned player of the year. Rappahannock head coach James Bieger, who orchestrated his Red Raiders team to a 6-5 state championship win over Chilhowie, earned coach-of-the-year honors.

Tuell, a versatile right-hander posted a 9-1 record with two saves to go with a 1.99 ERA in 70-1/3 innings. He struck out 45 batters, issued just 17 walks, and pitched five complete games.

In the state finals, Tuell allowed two earned runs in a complete-game performance in the loss to Rappahannock. 

As an offensive threat, Tuell batted .416 with 12 doubles, two triples, 16 RBIs, 33 runs, 23 walks, four HBP, and 16 stolen bases.

He finished the season with a .623 slugging percentage, .557 OBP, 1.180 OPS, along with a .897 fielding percentage.

He remains uncommitted.
